A Christmas Flourish
James Curnow (1943 - )
James Curnow grew up in Royal Oak and graduated from Kimball High School. He is a very prolific composer, having written over four hundred works for band, orchestra and choir. His pieces have been performed by such varied ensembles as the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra and the U.S. Army Band. “A Christmas Flourish” is based on the French carol “Angels We Have Heard On High”
Coventry Carol

Compared to many of our traditional carols, Coventry is not so cheery. Written in sixteenth century England, it tells the tale of the three wise men who do not return to King Herod with the location of the boy king. Herod then orders the death of all male children under the age of two.
The carol is a lullaby used to hush the baby so that Herod's soldiers wouldn't hear him.
